STEM
Selmer Middle School Stem Class
Welcome to the 2025-2026 Selmer Middle School STEM class. STEM stands for science, technology, and engineering. Our classes will operate in study modules where time is given for in-depth study of our given topic.
Currently, we are studying weather, particularly its pattern, formation, and what leads to a weather event.
I have set up a weather monitoring station here at Selmer Middle so that we can study the weather here at school and have access remotely to the data. Also, the station is registered with The National Weather Service and is feeding data every five minutes to the service to monitor weather in our area. The link below will take you to the site to monitor.
The weather module will lead into emergency communication devices such as Amateur Radio, FRS, scanners, and shortwave radios. Students will be communicating on the devices to emergency services as well as other Ham operators. I am wanting this to lead into an opportunity to make contact with the International Space Station.
For those I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet, here is a little about me: Before I began my teaching career, I worked as a chemical operator for British Petroleum, where we made the material for the exterior panels for the Space Shuttle and nose- cone for ballistic missiles. After I left this position, I went to work for Georgia Pacific Resin in a chemical plant where I ran chemical reactors to produce various resins in the plywood or engineered board field, this led to a promotion to Georgia Pacific Research and Development Laboratory outside of Atlanta. My task at the lab was to analyze materials, set up studies, develop novel products related to wood, FRP, insulation, and run tests in the lab and pilot plant.
Also, I am an Amateur Radio operator, call sign KG6LGD. My love for learning eventually led to founding my chosen career of teaching, in which I have taught social studies, math, science, STEM, and computer science.
Hoping to meet you all soon.
